Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt was born July 14th 1862 in Baumgarten, near Vienna in Austria-Hungary, the second of seven children – three boys and four girls. All three sons displayed artistic talent early on. In 1876, Klimt was awarded a scholarship to the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts (Kunstgewerbeschule), where he studied until 1883, and received training as an architectural painter. In 1888, Klimt received the Golden order of Merit from Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria for his contributions to murals painted in the Burgtheater in Vienna. He also became an honorary member of the University of Munich and the University of Vienna. In the early 1890s, Klimt met Emilie Flöge, who, notwithstanding the artist’s relationships with other women, was to be his companion until the end of his life. Whether his relationship with Flöge was sexual or not is debated, but during that period Klimt fathered at least 14 children.

Beginning in the late 1890s he took annual summer holidays with the Flöge family on the shores of Attersee and painted many of his landscapes there. Klimt was largely interested in painting figures; these works constitute the only genre aside from figure-painting which seriously interested Klimt. Klimt’s Attersee paintings are of a number and quality so as to merit a separate appreciation. Formally, the landscapes are characterized by the same refinement of design and emphatic patterning as the figural pieces.

Klimt’s ‘Golden Phase’ was marked by positive critical reaction and success. Many of his paintings from this period used gold leaf; the prominent use of gold can first be traced back to Pallas Athene (1898) and Judith I (1901), although the works most popularly associated with this period are the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907) and The Kiss (1907-1908). Klimt travelled little but trips to Venice and Ravenna, both famous for their beautiful mosaics, most likely inspired his gold technique and his Byzantine imagery. Between 1907 and 1909, Klimt painted five canvases of society women wrapped in fur. His apparent love of costume is expressed in the many photographs of Flöge modelling clothing he designed.

Gustav Klimt died on February 6th 1918 after suffering a stroke and pneumonia following a flu epidemic. He is buried in Vienna.

Klimt’s incredible popularity lives on and his art has sold for some of the highest prices ever recorded such as Birch Forest (1903) for US40.3 million and his portraits of Adele Bloch-Bauer from 88million to 135million.

Bruce Lee – Warrior

Back in 1971 Bruce Lee had an idea to do a TV show about a martial arts expert in the wild west. At the time studios like Warner Brothers and Paramount turned it down. WBros did do a TV show called Kung Fu starring a different actor after Bruce approached them, seemingly they stole his idea and cast a different actor in the lead part.

Luckily Bruce’s notes have been found and 48 years later we have Warrior on Netflix. Justin Lin (director/producer), knowing the myth around The Warrior contacted Bruce’s daughter Shannon and the show was finally made.

Although we haven’t Warrior posters we do have Bruce Lee.

Whale Watching

We’re lucky enough to live near Newcastle, NSW and our coastline is great for spotting whales. Between May and November whales can be spotted from multiple spots on the coasts. In SA and VIC it seems to be the Southern Right Whale whilst the Humpbacks head north to mate in the Great Barrier Reef and Kimberley.

STASH TINS – put in them whatever you like :)

Okay, we know that the fact that they’re called ‘stash’ tins and the fact that many of the images on the tins are of marijuana leaves and mushrooms imply that storing naughty stuff is the only thing these are for. But of course a small tin can be used for anything.

Aside from the cannabis related ones there’s plenty of really cool images for music lovers including Iggy Pop, Blondie, AC/DC, Dead Kennedys and Bob Marley, plus some more generic ones like peace signs.

I myself keep butterfly clips in my Bowie, a certain 2kcal mint in my Ankh and coffee money in Marilyn.

And guess what! They make that really satisfying ‘pop/snap’ noise that can only be made by a tin with a tight waterproof seal.

Hundreds of uploads and amendments

Here at Poster Plus we have been working very hard over the last couple of months to upload hundreds of images for you to buy in the EGIM Fine Art Print range. We always had a few on our site but the images were grainy and some of thie size information was wrong. Well now our in-house photographer is taking photos of each and every one so that the picture you see on our site is as close to the actual colour of the print as possible and the details are correct so as to help you make an informed choice when selecting.

EGIM Fine Art Prints are an exclusive collection of fine art reproductions printed in Italy. We import them so as to bring a very large and affordable range of very famous works to the Australian market. This range includes the much celebrated classical and contemporary masters like Van Gogh, Monet, Klimt, Cezanne, Miro, Dali, Picasso, Kandinsky and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Most of the prints come in at least two sizes and many in three or four. The size of each image varies according to the proportions of the original paintings which are generally reproduced in full.

RIP Grumpy Cat

She was a friend to thousands around the world, cheering up our days with her grumpy little face.

Grumpy Cat (real name Tardar Sauce) died aged 7 in Arizona, USA on May 14th. Her famous face was caused by an underbite and feline dwarfism.

As of March this year Grumpy Cat had over twelve million followers across social media.

If you wish to celebrate the life of this legend we still have a couple of poster images and some mugs.

We have been singing the praises of blacklight posters for some time, and with the addition of some amazing new images, we can also take this product way beyond the cannabis culture it has long been associated with.
